Hello everyone,
Writing today from Port Macquarie, about 400km north of Sydney.
Had a nice night in Yamba on the 2nd, great hostel with excellent facilities. We stayed in a 4 share mixed dorm room with a nice English couple who had been living at the hostel for 2 months! Got a bit of a fright in the morning to see Charlie the hostel watch dog (in reality a gorgeous poodle cross) sleeping in our room. Luke cooked a yummy hot brekkie and we were back on the road. Still raining so no swimming yet.
Arrived in Coffs Harbour around lunchtime and it was absolutely pouring. Stayed at another hostel but this time in a double room so all by ourselves. Found a great pub just down the road to watch the rugby league Gand Final, got there in time to watch the Junior Warriors win the under 21 comp, then it got quite rowdy there for the main event.
Made friends with some local Aussie larrakins, who had probably been at the pub since breakfast time. One was a Dragons fan (who won the game) and was probably the loudest person in the whole place. He was so delighted with the result that he gave me (Jemma) his second most prized possesion- his Dragons scarf. His most prized possesion was his Dragons jersey he was wearing but he wasnt too keen to swap it for Lukes Waikato Chiefs jersey!
It rained all night and all day while in Coffs, it was such a shame as there are some beautiful beaches and walks to some islands just off shore, but it has just been awful outside. Went for a quick look at the beaches and jetty but didnt get out of the car.
On the way out of Coffs we stopped in at the Clog Barn ( was keen to get some clog style slippers but very expensive) and the place Coffs is famous for - the Big Banana!
Australia is known for its many 'big' things scattered across the country, so we ticked this one off the list! We shared a banana split mmmmmm yum.
Now in Port Macquaire and the weather seems to be clearing slightly - fingers crossed.
Getting a bit antsy not being able to go for a decent run/walk/swim. The water will be getting colder further south we go so hoping the sun comes sooner rather than later.
We can feel the change in humidity already from the Sunny Coast, when it rains there its sticky and warm but here it is decidedly cooler. Have done about 700km in the car so far.
Staying in a great little unit tonight with a fully equiped kitchen so we will be cooking up a storm tonight while we can.
Talk to you all soon,
Luke and Jemma xo
