Our last day in Easter Island was fantastic just like the others. We had a hire car again and went back to see all of our favourite places. We also managed to find the "2 windows" caves that he hadn´t on the first day. They were a tiny hole in the ground that you dropped into and then crawled along a tunnel for about 10 metres. Suddenly in front of you there were 2 massive holes straight in front of you out onto the Pacific. It was stunning and such a brilliant view straight out onto the waves but again amazing to us that there was no sign, guard rail or anything- We definately think of that as a good thing as it´s very unspoilt but it was quite dangerous! We also went to the quarry where the red top knots were carved- it´s amazing that they wewre made the complete other side of the island and then the two pieces joined together.
Rapa Nui also wins the prize for the best airport. There is only one flight by one airline that goes to Santiago. It is normally always delayed so they have a fantastic system in place. In the morning of your flight you call the airport who tell you what time they are expecting the flight and therefore what time they will open check in. At that time you go down to the airport with your bags and get your boarding past. (you can only be a maximum of 4 streets away.) You then go back to your guesthouse/ the beach/ the ice cream parlour and wait until you see the plane landing when you return to the airport and get on your flight!
Sadly it´s not like that in Santiago where we fly out of tonight to go to Auckland. It´s a truly head screwing one- a 14 hour flight on which we miss out the 16th September when we cross the dateline, we then arrive 16 hours ahead at 4am in the morning 2 days later! Hopefully it will just confuse our bodies so much they will do as we tell them. It´ll be very sad to leave South America- we could spend ages more in this beautiful part of the world and we can´t believe it has been 3 and a half months since we left home. New Zealand will be the start of a new chapter.....
