So, the good intentions to leave Gili T and head to a calmer haven lasted all of 4 minutes when I walked out of the internet place and bumped into Kath and Tom, a couple I'd met on the boat over. We decided that it was Beer O'Clock, which lasted quite a while until we found a bar run by two totally insane guys who made good and very cheap cocktails so it turned into Mojito O'Clock, then Margarita O'Clock...
Having not drunk alcohol for a couple of weeks the night actually ended with a fairly early night! The next morning I explored the island, visited the turtle hatchery and went for lots of swims in the sea which was turquoise and beautiful.
During the afternoon I ran into Kath & Tom again (it's a very small island) and we parked ourselves in a bar run by guys even crazier than the previous one and a hilarious night. It seemed the only role the long haired and tattooed Harry behind the bar had was to take the piss out of everyone walking past - shouting "Oooh Betty", "Easy Tiger" (usually directed at oldies), "Whatever Minger", or sometimes the plain obvious, like "Japanese" at people. After a few hours and a few Bintangs we decided to head to watch the Manchester City v Manchester United game at another bar after having a couple of cocktails on the way. That night I played quite a long game of "who keeps moving my key-hole" before getting into my room...
We had decided to go on a snorkelling trip the next day so all feeling decidedly fuzzy we got on the boat at 10.30. The water cleared the cobwebs and the visibility was amazing. we snorkelled in a few spots - one over the wreck of a Japanese ship which was incredible. Then we hung out on Gili Air for a couple of hours before heading back.
We decided that we'd have a sensible night and eat at one of the seafood barbecue along the beach front. It was one of the best meals ever. The prawns were mutants and really sweet and I had coral trout while Kath and Tom shared a huge lobster. Typically the night I was stone cold sober there was a dance party at the next door bar and so I dozed on and off while listening to some of the worst DJing ever. The music stopped ab\t about 5am when the call to prayer started!
I left first thing the next morning for the long painful journey back. I was going to take my little brother's advice and take the speed boat back but the weather is still too rough and so it was the ferry which took 6 1/2 hours this time. I arrived 'home' to Ubud at about 9pm and collapsed into a very deep sleep. Gili was a lot of fun but I think I left in time - on the last day it took half an hour to get anywhere because you'd gotten to know everyone so would stop for chats every few steps. My little hippy town of Ubud seems very calm in comparison.
I've got a couple of days left here before heading to Vietnam and am planning on more massages, ginger tea and wandering in paddi fields.
