As soon as I was settled back in to Ourense life I started weightlifting training again! When I was here before Christmas I joined in with the familys weekly weightlifting training run by the grandad- a former weightlifting champion and I really enjoyed it!
When home over Christmas and I told people I'd done it the usual response was to look at my arms and laugh and this is what I would do if I told myself the same thing!! So I'm not exactly the right build, as well as having skinny long arms I also apparently have shoulders that roll forward adding slight complications to the lifting technique! (The dad who is a pilates teacher is determined that I leave with forward facing shoulders and has a range of weird excercises for me to do)
But I love it- it's surprisingly addictive wanting to beat the amount you lift each week and great excercise. We train in the basement of a gym. There are the pro's on one side all big and muscly and then Eyen, Gael and I on the other side. YES....the kids do it too!!
So yesterday I had my first competition since being back and lifted 17kg in the first section and 22kg in the second. I was really pleased as this is the same as I lifted last year and I've had only 2 weeks of training. This week I trained 3 nights in a row and I was aching all over before the competition even started. Huge thanks to my aupair dad who trains me and tells me what to do and when to do what as I can never hear my name being called out over the crackly sports hall microphones. Gael and I came home with a medal each and very proud of ourselves. He's 5 and gets marked on technique- so cute!! He lifts a bar a bit like a broom handle and captures the crowd with his efforts and his big smile.
I think its probably the only time in my life you'll find me kitted out in a lycra all in one wearing what look like ancient bowling shoes .
