JEANNE:
We´re still in Granada, until 2pm at least...
We spent Saturday in the Alhambra, and it was more than we had expected. The grounds are great. The Nasrid Palace, which has all the beautiful Moorish fountains, tiles and plaster work is stunning, and far more extensive than the few courtyards that are always pictured. The Generalife gardens are lovely now - they must be gorgeous when everything is in lush bloom.
Aside from less blooms, October is a very good month to be here. Daytime temperatures have been abour 18-low 20s, and the evenings are pleasant.
The night we arrived we had a huge windstorm, which in addition to a lot of tree damage, filled the air with dust. It looked like smog. Our hotel is on the Bib-Rambla plaza, which had been written up as a quiet people watching plaza. Well, this is a national holiday weekend, and the plaza was full of booths and people and music and noise. They tore the booths down last night - all night! The noise went on til 5 am. Today, the plaza is quiet...
MICHAEL:
A couple of interesting things we´ve seen: The guy with a jester´s cap riding a unicycle through the crowded Plaza Bib-Rambla while juggling knives, whilst blasting on a whistle to clear a path in front of him; yesterday we sat in an alley to listen to a couple of flamenco guitarists for a couple of pieces -- we bought a CD and the man who recorded it was eager to tell us to listen for the different styles of flamenco on the CD; the Alhambra, probably in common with every historic site in Europe, has a substantial population of cats -- most seem to be in far better health than the ones I remember from Athens; while there is no shortage of dog'turds on the city pavements, we have seen several people out walking Fidito while carrying a plastic bag for gathering doggy-caca.
Today we are leaving for Ronda on the afternoon train. It´s only a couple of hours away. We´ll tell you what Ronda is like once we´ve seen it.
We´ve tried, but so far failed, to post any photos on this site. We will prbably try again...
