We are currently in the town of Lanjarón, in an area of Andalucía known as the Alpujarra. We just finished a meal where I had Jeanne´s soup (Sopa Alpujarra, made with ham, chorizo and beans) and Jeanne had my soup (made with creamed squash) and Jeanne had her own dish made of bacalao (salt cod) with beans. We´ve also been eating churros and chocolate (hot and thick) for breakfast.
We arrived in Malaga Friday afternoon, kind of worn out after many hours on airplanes and in airports. Slept until 10:00 the next morning, and went out to explore Malaga. Lovely city. Lots of squares and cafes and narrow alleys and old churches. Visited the Alcazaba, which is the Moorish palace and gardens. Lots of lovely little courtyards and views over the city and carved stonework.
Sunday (yesterday) we rented a car and headed for the hills. Extremely narrow roads hanging over ravines. Michael likes to study the cloud patterns while he drives. He says I´m a more nervous passenger than I used to be. We spend the night outside Alhama de Granada, which is a lovely little town on the edge of a gorge. You can hike down into it - there are old structures and sheep and goat pens in the caves. This area was known for banditry up until recently - lots of really good places to hide.
The weather has been perfect - high 70s during the day, cool in the morning. Jasmine, bougainvilla and frangipani are in bloom - I even saw a pomegranite bloom (they´re red, then the young fruit is red, turns green as it gets bigger, then red as it ripens).
No pictures to share yet, since the computer is somewhere under this table.
The keyboards have characters where we have things like énter´so we´re surprised by what appears on the screen.
