Ventured out on bikes to find a recommended restaurant serving Lao fondue, a 'must' we were told. We were also given directions which didn't include the fact that road was unlit and under construction. However the goal was worth the dust, potholes and deviations. Lao fondue consists of cooking meat or fish on top of dome with a gulley of soup to which you add veg (and a whole egg!) all over very hot coals - delicious.
More on the food subject, today we did a cookery class, starting with a trip to the market where we didn't buy bile, blood or buffalo snout, some of the delights on sale. It was remarkably calm and absolutely no harrassment which was a mew experience for us. The class was run by one of the local restaurants but on their 'farm' which was really an oasis of calm by a lake surrounded by exotic plants. We prepared, cooked and ate 6 dishes. We will try to recreate some when we return but it won't include the chicken mixture stuffed into a 'basket' made from one piece of lemon grass! We were a group of 15 and had a very convivial day. We were reminded how short our trip is by others on 3,6 and even 14 month trips!
We ended the day sipping a drink by the river having crossed the bamboo bridge, leaving the bikes on the other side!
So far can only add photos from iPhone but will try to upload some of the few we have taken on the camera!

Tony Sounds great fun. I hope we're invited to the Lao cook-off!
Jonathan Seath Hi Jean and Brian It all sounds wonderful. The fondue sounds great and you were very entreprising to find a cookery class. It must be interesting meeting people on very long journeys. I wonder what kind of background they have. Laos sounds brilliant and a must visit I think (we are still learning how to pronounce the country's name and adjective. Weather is turning cold here at the moment but I am off to Brighton for a conference whilst Monica is at her jewellry class (sic). Lots of love Monica and Jonathan
