Things are deffo looking up. We woke this morning (4.30 to Buddhist drums - good grief!) & then again at 8 & found ourselves in paradise. The hotel is great, located on the banks of the Mekong. Breakfast perfect.
After the necessary hour's admin we headed off to the Vietnam consulate to get visas. We had been warned to expect a long wait (possibly days). Must have hit it right as the bloke was evidently in a rush to go for lunch & did them in 10 mins!
Flushed with success we tootled back to the hotel & hired 2 bikes to celebrate (yes really).
Made it 2 streets before we were forced to stop for a beer & a bowl of very good soup.
LP is a wonderful town- totally unspoiled & as yet undiscovered by mass tourism. The people are delightfully friendly - innocent almost. Completely charming in every way.
Then off again, round town, ending up at the temple on the hill (at least 300 steps) where we stayed until sunset when there was an unseemly scramble to take photos. Got the sunset but couldn't avoid 250 heads in the foreground.
Bemused by the particularly annoying German couple who had bought 2 caged sacrificial birds, apparently to release at sunset, but constantly prodded & poked at them till then.
On to pre dinner treat for B - a pork kebab from a street vendor. Historic. J pronounced hers 'not bad - quite warm but very fatty'. Great decision - must have more tomorrow.
Booked our Lao cookery course at the Tamarind on Wed - starts with a guided trip to the produce market. Can't wait.
Tomorrow starts early at 6, watching a procession of monks being fed. Then back for proper breakfast.
