We awoke on Friday morning at the pleasant time of 3:30AM and were out the door by four, on the way to the airport to fly to Croatia! We basically slept the whole flight as we were rather weary from the early start so it seemed to fly, t'was only a 2 hr flight after all!
We stepped off the plane in Split, wearing our jumpers and murano wool tights (obviously Tim wasn't sporting a pair!) to a lovely temp of 30 degrees! It was so so wonderful to be hot! Once inside the airport we wipped off the warm gear and were ready for our summer holiday! And what a holiday it has been - we absolutely love it! Nothing, touch wood, hasn't gone perfectly. Nothing could be better! We arrived at our hostel (always a nerve racking experience as you're never knowing what sort of hell hole you are about to call home!) and were so impressed. We had our own little apartment, kitted out with kitchen, ensuite, air con, tv, computer - even had two single beds!! And we all know how much Tim loves his own bed! We had a wander around town during the day, exploring all the funny little tunnels and markets Split, Croatia offers. We were staying right beside a Palace and spent lots of time sifting through the markets where you can find any of the following - plucked chickens, tacky g-strings, fruits, eggs, very shabby fake designer bags, sunglasses and wallets, cool sandals & bracelets and of course the dead mammal products strung up in stall entrances…?? Certainly a sight to see!! You can even pick yourself up a huge bunch of raspberries or blueberries for 12 kuna - coming to a total of approx …. Aussie dollars!
Split looks beautiful at night. The Palace with its smooth white stone, worn down with age, is lit up by lanterns and men in aged warrior gear patrol the area. It's just like you have stepped back thousands of years in time! Step out of the Palace walls though and you are suddenly right back in 2010. Buskers set themselves up along the Marina bay and crowds gather to see them. People watch on from bars which also look out over the still crystal blue water. The Marina's here certainly differ from the old Runaway Bay Marina that's for sure! The water is so inviting you just want to hurl yourself off the boat into its clear water, forgetting of course that the boats empty their s*** tanks in there!!
After eating a yummy dinner whilst watching the soccer (that was my idea of course. Pause. NOT!) we went and picked up Kirky and Lisa and showed them to their room. The boys had a beer (pivo) each whilst Lisa and I tried our first repulsive glass of wine, then it was off to bed for an early night (early being like 10:30pm here-not the 8:30 like usual Jan hehe!) One warning for anyone planning a trip to Croatia, do not get excited about the wine! White or red, they are both vile!! And there is only two choices of wine.. its white.. or its red… and that's it! Both of them taste similar - cherry mixed with cigarette ash?? Not overly pleasant that's for sure!! A shandy, pronounced-sprite & pivo, goes down much nicer!!
