Next stop is Mljet. Again a beautiful sunny day! We love seeing how the locals roll everywhere we stop. I wouldn't say they are the friendliest bunch of people, obviously not too happy about sharing their little piece of paradise with a bunch of jibberish-speaking tourists! Fair call.. But everywhere is always full of unique little surprises. On the way home from our bike ride, we saw a man spearing fish with what we decided was a very high success rate! He had a 3metre pole with 3 forks at the end of it and when the time was right, drove it into the ocean.. Was so funny to watch him pull a spear right out of the water with a barracuda flipping around! I have photos of him in the red shorts ha ha! Rhett you would have been so impressed!
The same afternoon we went on the most beautiful bike ride ever. We paid our 25 kuna ($5Aussie dollars) for an hour on some pretty impressive mountain bikes-as long as you don't mind your chain dragging on the ground for extended periods of time! We had a lovely little Croatian man tell us all about the island, where to ride and swim etc. He somehow managed to forget to let us know however, that there was a hill at the end of the first street that was honestly like trying to ride up Ayers Rock! Naturally Tim did it with ease but everyone else in our crew certainly struggled - the butts were a burnin! We rode all around these prestine lakes and when I say that, these lakes aren't like ones back home. They are not brown and the water tasting like cow pats! They are a bright crystal blue. You can easily see every detail of the bottom even when its metres deep, up to 50 metres to be exact, a read it in a brochure!! Very impressive. And there are so many pretty flowers!
The weather story..
First day, paradise.. Cruising on board this spectacular boat, clothes off, oiled up, baking in the sun and getting to know our new crew of youngy's on the boat - all from Australia! Could this actually be real?? Day 2 is also beautiful, we go on our glorious bike ride but by nightfall, as we sit unsheltered in a restaurant, we start to run into some shabby weather.. Up we get with all out cutlery and plates and head inside! Then the weather really turns from amazing sunset to just plain unpleasent! Lightning forks pierce the sky, thunder cracks and echoes through the sky like we have never heard before, and it rains-thick and heavy drops fall through the sky and land with thuds in the water! So impressive! This all happens in the evenings though so we are quite happy to watch the show! Yesterday however is when everything changed.. We awoke to the sound of very heavy rain, looked out our window and I promise you, my first thought was, we are on board one of the trawlers of deadliest catch. Huge swells, pouring rain, howling winds, massive swell. Everything that was on shelves in our room was thrown across the floor and our toiletries were strewn across the bathroom floor, our mirror went close to shattering many times - we could constantly hear something else somewhere on the boat crashing.. Glasses and bottles breaking in the kitchen, so intense! And for the 2nd time in my entire life, after hundreds of boat trips, Jazzy gets seasick! Green as hell lying in bed in this massive, turbulent seas.. Miserable!
It starts to calm down though as we arrive in Dubrovnic. The day looks brighter! We put our swimmers in our backpacks and head off in search of Old Town, a cool area that literally is - The Old part of Town! When we arrive in Old Town we go and grab a few snaps of the area where Brit Lapthorne's limbs were found which I know, is kinda sick, but it's a really spectacular, ruggard sea. We are just discussing what to do when it starts to rain.. And rain it does! Pouring, fat drops of rain come falling down. We try to find shelter-proving very difficult as everyone else in Duprovnic is doing the same thing! We find a dry spot but then the wind picks up. We are then soaked as the wind has the rain falling on a diagonal so we huddle under a café umbrella and decide to wait it out, plus it was very entertaining watching everyone running about everywhere with umbrellas flipping inside out and people in white clothing - a mum with a baby sporting a massive G-banger was the best! We shiver there, trying to get body warmth when the lightening and thunder starts-now it is really storming! Lighting doesn't just flash through the sky here, forks stab through the sky and the thunder is deafening! We are ankle deep in freezing water-Nike sneakers weren't the best attire-numb and pruny feet for hours! And then the hail comes down!! People are going insane, people sprinting-searching for shelter, kids crying, waiters pulling in umbrella's and food, plates smashing, computer equipment and speakers getting thrashed by hail stones.. It was madness! Hail everywhere-hitting out head and faces, even down my top!! I have never seen anything like it! The really bizarre thing was that it never rains in Croatia?? Led alone hails!! So the place has no drainage and no shelter!! The other bizarre thing was that this storm didn't stop for over 2 hours. Tim and I cuddled up in one tiny towel, sopping wet, freezing cold, wind blown to the max-even have that red ring around the outside of my lips today from the cold wind yesterday! It was just purely insane madness. Out of control!
