After fueling up for the day on the pitiful hostel breakfast, the five of us dropped by the co-op to pack a lunch for the hike. Stocked up on bread, cheese, meat and chocolate milk, we caught the bus to the beginning point of what would turn out to be one of the most epic days of my life. The first hour or so, we passed through little towns as we worked our way up into a valley nestled between towering mountain peaks. We followed along a river of milky blue water as it took us deeper and deeper into this wonderland. Hiking here was so surreal, which each step taking us to even more beautiful sights. We grabbed some walking sticks and munched on delicious wild raspberries we found along the path as we breathed in the crisp, fresh Swiss air. After 3 hours or so of hiking, we came upon the picturesque town of Lauderbrunnen. Waterfalls cascaded off the cliffs surrounding us as we walked through the town with dreamy admiration (people were giving us funny looks since we were the only ones carrying walking sticks). A further hour or so and we arrived at Trummelbachfälle, this incredible series of waterfalls that tunnels through the rock. We rode the tram up to the top and walked through the various viewing points as the water roared and showered us with mist. Afterwards, we had a picnic in the center of the valley and marveled at our surroundings while we ate. Four hours in and with the sunny day turning into a light drizzle, we decided it was probably time to start heading back. Along the way, Drew broke out into a rap about our hike that lasted for like 15 minutes and completely blew us all away. When we reached the bus stop and the end of our journey, blistered and soaking wet, we were exhausted beyond belief. We limped to the co-op to grab ingredients for dinner and then took over the guest kitchen making some delicious food. We met an awesome Canadian named Stephanie and after we finished eating, we all sat in the lounge playing cards and talking before the hike eventually caught up with us and we were out for the night! My experience today more than exceeded my expectations of Switzerland, not just because of the incredible landscape but the amazing people I met that made this day one of my favorite of the trip so far.
