I love Chiang Mai ! Much better then Bangkok, smaller and a lot of history. The surrounding country side is beautiful as well as the "old city" in the centre which is still surrounded by walls. Train to Chiang Mai I started the day with a trip to MBK which is a huge shopping mall in Bangkok, it's six stories and I bet there must be over 400 stores.
