You'll have to bear with me on this while I try to remember what we did in Peru. I am currently in Fiji (on yet again a very slow computer) but we have not had internet access for the month.
After fearing the Inca Trail for weeks, it turned out that the jungle was far scarier. We flew from ugly Lima to sweaty Puerto Maldonaldo on the edge of the Amazon and then boarded a motorized canoe for three hours to take us deep into the jungle. Lunch was served in a leaf and it was all great fun for a while. Due to a flight delay we arrived at the lodge in darkness and had to trek with our torches. Having survived this in Brazil I wasn't so bothered by that. The lodge was also beautiful - a huge wooden colonial looking building. One problem though - it had no windows or doors. The jungle was welcome to roam your 'room'! I didn't sleep a wink as it sounded like monkeys, lions and rats were scurrying round our beds, and without electricity we couldn't see anything to prove otherwise! As it turned out there was only a toad in the bathroom and a bat in the roof.....
(Tme out. TBC in New Zealand....)
....I'm back and on an English keyboard for once (am now in Auckland). Anyway we were woken at four on our first day in the jungle to go up a canopy tower and watch the jungle come to life. It was noisy and beautiful but we unfortunately saw nothing more exciting than a few parrots. We visited an eco farm, went sailing in a dangerous boat on an oxbow river and went night time cayman hunting. It was awesome. I did get eaten alive however by some sandflies who bit me exactly 42 times on my arms - Alex counted as she applied cream!
We were up at five the next day to begin the boat journey out of the jungle, ready for our flight to Cuzco - 14,000 meters above sea level.
