March 29th
Woke up today and it is overcast and chilly, probably not English chilly, more Mexican chilly – ( little play on words there? ). The word is that it will warm up by lunchtime but it is definitely a hoodie morning.! Air France are due again today, later on this morning, they usually ride, have lunch and then have a sunbathe and go back about 5pm. I think they pay about 750 pesos each – about £35, not bad really when you think a 2 hour ride at home is about £60 with no food.
I have stopped using a mirror as my nose looks like I've been in a fight with Mike Tyson and my neck arms and forehead are in various stages of moulting to say nothing of the back of my hands which look positively reptilian! I have used a whole pot of body butter so far!
Tragedy has struck!! My Palomo has lost a shoe and I am being transferred to Da Vinci. He is supposed to be a very smooth ride so just hope he is as sure footed and kind as Palomo. I think a few well placed treats are called for! We can buy the treats for the horses from the bar area. They love them. They appear to be a mix up of oats, bran etc all bound together with something yummy (for horses).
Climbed aboard Da Vinci only to discover that he was Troya, Corinne had Da Vinci and Jurgen had Cherokee! So everyone off and shuffle round and off we went. Just what I needed with dodgy ribs
We went quite fast and seemed to spend a lot of time climbing mountains of rocks crossing rivers, scrambling over walls – all on horseback. We were accompanied by Luxor the ranch’s male Boxer, daddy of the eight puppies, who seemed to relish the trip, meeting all the local dogs and probably fathering a few more litters along the way.
These horses are amazing. They have their hooves trimmed a lot more than we do at home but I believe this is how they are so nimble across all the rocks. I have even sat aboard as they have literally climbed over a drystone wall.
We stopped for a beer at a local bar and it was at this point I realised that I had not taken any pain killers and was suffering quite badly. Back on board Da Vinci I felt that we were going further and further away from the ranch and we all started wondering where we were and what time we would be back for lunch. We entered another village and Max, our guide, just beamed at us and said "Lunch". So off we got and we walked into a pretty little restaurant where dinner was all set up for us. One of Uschi's great surprises! Very traditional Mexican food and hibiscus juice and watermelon juice. Everything was delicious. Max then asked me if I wanted to continue or go back in the car and I decided to go back by car as I was in a lot of discomfort.
I was collected in one of the cars and along the way home we picked up a local lady who turned out to be the massage lady. She reckoned that she could help me with my bruising so I agreed to a one hour session with her once we got back to the ranch.
Well, whatamistakeatomakea!!!
She was ruthless. Even just on my legs she was drawing all sorts of squeaks and ouches out of me. But, when she started on my right ribs – aaaarrrggghhhh!!!. Then she started moving my arm around at the shoulder and I managed to tell her with sign language that my shoulder dislocates and not to do that.
She then bound my ribs in a tight bandage and I have another booking for Friday when she will cause more agony on what I think is a broken rib. However the right side feels tons better so who knows what will happen on Friday.
There are some stunning horse paintings all around the house. I think they have been done by a local artist and they are for sale. I would have loved to bring one home with me but with a sensible head on, I had to leave them for somebody else.
Not much else happened that day apart from a scrummy dinner wine and an early night. There is a new guest arriving from Ireland later on tonight and a pair of BA pilots due for one night tomorrow.
