No longer on Thailand time so the internet is considerably more expensive in New Zealand. So here we go. Firstly we flew from Bangkok to Sydney to spend 3 glorious days of sunshine hanging out on Bondi Beach, no chance! The rain poured pretty much from the moment we got there til we left. It was still great fun as spent this time recouperating, finally able to give our clothes and bodies a proper wash. We did the basic stuff any tourist does when they arrive in Sydney, Opera House, Bridge and Beach which are still classics even in the wet. One alarming thing that was discovered whilst in Australia is that Rach actually believed that the dizziness she was experiencing was due to the fact we were up side down! Her "logic" behind her thougths was that because we are in the southern hemisphere then we are upside dowm. As I right this now she is still adament that this is the case!
Our next flight took us to Christchurch in New Zealand, we spent a couple of days here while we waited to pick up our Van, you'll see photos of it eventually but for the time being just imagine it as the van from Scooby Doo. Flowers painted all over in true hippy cliche. Our first road trip took us to Lake Tekapo, famous for it's tourquoise colour due to the glazier grinding the rocks into a fine powder making the sky's reflection vivid. After this we headed to the base of Mount Cook, Australasia's biggest peak. We spent an afternoon hiking to the glazier at the bottom of it, again stunning views. Dunedin was next where we were able to walk a long the beach inhabited with sea lions and yellow eyed penguins. By the end of the week we had completed most of the South Island's East coast and decided to head to Queenstown, the home of the bungee jump!
We opted for two different bungees (Rach chose the Original Kawarau Bridge jump where it all started 30 years ago and I went for the big 134m Nevis Canyon) and we did a tandem giant swing (the biggest in the world). Rach went first and to say she was terrified would be an understatement, I had genuine concerns she would bottle it. She did jump, a swan dive too, but not before, whilst on the lip having an indepth conversation with the instructor about the benefits of different jump styles and then allowing the crowd to hear what she thought was a personal pep talk "you can do this Rach, don't be a frickin' chicken Rach". We have a video and its worth a watch just to see her face just before she jumps (check out the link to it on Rach's facebook page!). I managed to do mine without to much drama and we also did the swing jump in an unorthadox position, me upside down and facing backwards and Rach the right way up and facing forward (see cover photo!), again Rach's face in the photos is worth every penny.
Whilst in Christchruch we also managed to get a white water rafting trip done and we hope to do a parachute jump weather permitting.
