Well, what an absolutely fantasic 2 weeks we had in Ko Samui!!!!!! We stayed in a fantastic 5* hotel with Emma's brother Pete and his misses, Mandy, the weather was perfect, we only had one day of rain and we ate like kings, lol. The hotel was located on a hill with a choice of 2 big swimming pools, 2 small pools, a pool bar and a beachfront. We spent several hours one afternoon in the pool bar getting sloshed on cocktails, ah the backpacker life, ha ha! We were about 3km away from the main beach of Chaweng but we hired a scooter so the location didn't really matter. We also took the opportunity of getting our dental treatment up to scratch while we were there and even had out teeth bleached - that was one of the most painful experiences ever and we wouldn't do it again eventhough our teeth are lovely and white!!!! We went on a boat trip one day which included kayaking and views of a pretty inland lake at Ang Thong National Park but other than that, it was beach, poolside and bars all the way! Pete and Mandy took us for a meal for our 1st anniversary to the best Italian on Samui and it was fantastic, we both discovered that we love clams! One thing that made us laugh, the hawkers on the main drag always try and guess your nationality and more often than not, they thought Jay was Swedish - so we named him Sven Goren, ha ha. Also every jewellery seller, taxi driver, ice cream seller we came across would offer Jay - marajuana, cocaine, mushrooms, opium, when he said he didn't do drugs, just beer, they said he must do drugs because he's got tattoos!!! All in all we had a really really great time in Samui and it was lovely to see Pete and Mandy and we were quite sad to have to leave but our money wouldn't have lasted much longer with that sort of life style!! Pete did remind us that we were leaving Samui but still had months of holidaying ahead of us and he was going back to rainy England and work, so we shouldn't complain!!! So we said goodbye and boarded our flight back to Bangkok to meet up with Fran and Andy who we travelled through a bit of Java, Borneo and some of north Malaysia with - 7 weeks in all. We had a few days in Bangkok catching up with Frandy - including watching the latest Harry Potter movie at the Imax theatre, drinking cocktails and eating bugs - crickets, grasshoppers, meal worms, pupae of some sort and some little fly looking things. Jay and Andy also had their first taste of durian fruit and were not impressed, in fact we all repeated it for the rest of the night!! By coincidence, we should all be in Beijing at the same time in September for another reunion which will be great. We set off by bus on Sunday to Cambodia and are currently in Siem Reap. Next blog will be tomorrow :-)
