We had a beautiful day trip on the deep blue waters of Lake Titicaca, remarkable for its size and its height above sea level - 3800m. When walking near the water on the pre Inca agricultural terraces you have the illusion of being by the sea, and perhaps being in a southern Mediterean country, Greece or Italy.
One island we visited on the Lake is inhabited by a family groups of the Uro people. Their island is in water 20 metres deep, is man made entirely of reeds and floats on the surface of the water. Rope and wooden anchors secure the island in place, but it can easily be moved for a new view. The people fish and can also grow root crops (potatoes) on the older parts of the islands. Oh, and of course, they sell handicrafts to passing tourists. Jim was keenly bartering for an embrioded pillowcase, it was definately time to go. :) Who willl carry my extra reading books if Jim becomes loaded down with souvenirs?
We saw a spectacular ligthening storm across the lake, once again putting our new Cusco rain ponchos to the test. Pizza was the only possiblity for us in town, so we were back to our regular diet again. Coffee after the meal was a mistake too. You are presented with a jug containing a cold - thick - black - bitter liquid. This is poured into a mug 'to taste' and milk added on top. On a good day the milk is steaming hot, (and a dodgey but drinkable cocktail produced) but on a normal day? Milk that was heated at some point during the last 2 hours. The resulting cup of coffee? Coffee they call it!?
