Travelling fast now! A really interesting journey to the Bolivian capital involving 2 buses a ferry, a border crossing and 10 hours.
As we waited for our connecting bus we did get 2 hours at Copacacabana for lunch by the side of the lake. A wonderful white church with a line of cars and vans outside. They were bedecked in flowers and garlands, waiting to be blessed. Well, it was Sunday! Also waiting to be ´blessed´ in a different way, were 3 dogs on leads with their well dressed owners. They were queueing at a band stand next to the church, and amidst much yelping, free Rabies injections were being administered. Each lucky dog was awarded with a yellow ribbon around its neck in honour of the occasion. We couldn´t watch for too long, having experienced the vaccination ourselves. But later we were pleased to see most of the stray dogs of the town simlarly dressed in their ribbons.
2 hours outside of La Paz, and another huge thunderstorm. The hail stones quickly turned the road white and our driver was forced to ease off the gas. We´d commented on the poor state of the tyres before boarding the bus, and now understood why vehicles around here need blessing every Sunday!
Finally, safely to La Paz. What a position. The main city is at the bottom of a steep sided gorge (away from the perishing wind above) and is approached from the flat plateau at 4000m above, where the outskirts the slums and airport have developed. We are staying near San Francisco Square in quite an international / traveller area. We were warned not to get our camera out in public, but we really felt quite comfortable here. We really are on the Backpacker Trail, with decent coffee, non pizza food and lots of sight seeing.
We like La Paz!
