Made it.
We are staying in a hostel on the hill overlooking the fair city of Cusco, relaxing and testing our acclimatisation. - No worries so far.
Despite the efforts of the hustlers on the main square, (offering postcards, shoe shine - even though we are wearing tevas, cinema, restaurant, massage) I quite like Cusco. It is a Spanish looking city with domed churches, symetrical parks and columns. Before the conquest, Cusco was the Inca capital, but was destroyed by the Spanish. They built their own city instead, but found the 3 subsequent earthquakes created a challenge to their architecture!
Cusco has something of a reputation among travellers. Many are here waiting for tours to the famous city, some getting acclimatised, some visiting the numerous archelogical ruins nearby, and some, I hear, are here for the 'interesting' nightlife.
After a little hunting through the narrow cobbled streets we discovered the perfect travellers haunt. Jacks Cafe. It would have fit in in York or Brighton or Exeter. A coffee shop, with proper coffee at last, and meals - really good food, meat you could recognise, vegetarian options, gravey and chessey mash. WOW.
After eating a diet of predominently pizza, we were in food Heaven.
Tomorrow, we are setting off on our 4 day pilgrimage to the famous sacred city of the Incas. Machu Picchu.
