Woke up at 4 am in a hot flush . Not for the reason you think dear readers but because I was foolish enough to stay out in the sun yesterday by the pool for just a few more hours than my body could bear. So now I have a not so healthy looking red glow. However to use my involuntary insomnia in a positive way ( note the awesome alliteration at this early hour) I will write a little reflection of the first day at Oia on the beautiful island of Santorini.
What can I say? The photos that Susan and Steve showed me are every bit as awesome as being here reveals . From the sun soaked Mediterranean vistas from our white washed apartment with it's pool view, to the sublime sunset from our favourite restaurant at the top of the volcano, it is every bit the perfect holiday destination of my fantasies . We dined above the rooftops tonight after a thoroughly relaxing day by the pool. I can't remember when I last read a book cover to cover in one day but it has been a very long time ago. I gave myself permission to relax without any guilt feelings .Dinner was lamb shank and pannacotta washed down with a local white wine and Greek coffee in that order. Jude had the bream and Mille feuille all rather perfect . The Greek god who served it was delicious too and the Serbian pirate with earrings and a ponytail at the bar who teased us with cries of "Ozzie Ozzie " had us giggling like adolescent girls. All in all except for the sunburn, a pretty perfect day. Tomorrow we will bus around the island exploring the red black and white beaches and the prehistoric archaeological digs which go back millennia aparently. They have been preserved in much the same way as Pompeii was due to the ash of volcanic eruptions. So sine historic stuff to uncover here on this enigmatic Mediterranean jewel. Then we will meet some Americans we met at the bar at five pm to see their hotel . She mentioned they were staying in a cave which has been modernised . I asked to see it and she said ok yes so then we will go back to the restaurant for dinner and watch the sunset again . 360 degree views. Mmm I don't want to leave this place. Back to sleep now. Good night from paradise!!!
