We camped two nights at the south rim of the grand canyon. Mather camp ground was fine, but it was still pretty cold in April. It got down in the 20ies at night, and on our second night, we were treated to rain and hail. But stayed dry in our not so all season tent.
The visitor center is new and has a nice 20 minute movie documenting the canyon. It's free and for us it was a break from the wind.
From our camp site, we went on a bike ride out to the El Tovar hotel and Hopi House. There is a great trail system throughout the park and also a shuttle bus system that takes you just about everywhere you would need to go.
After our freezing cold night and waking to a very wet camp ground we decided to head over to the Market and have breakfast, use their wifi and charge our phones, ipad and Kindle. We felt so spoiled after two nights of cold wet camping.
The kids watched a show on the iPad and Vido and I enjoyed coffee and read on our devices.
After packing up camp, we got on another shutter and went out to the South Kaibab trailhead and hiked a little way down into the canyon. Someday we'll have to hike to the bottom with the kids, but at seven and nine years, they are not quite ready.
On our way out of the park we stopped at a few spots on the desert view drive. The watch tower was amazing and had some of the best views of the canyon.
If you plan to go to a few national parks in one year, get the national park pass for $80. It will pay for itself quickly. Enterence fees to most parks are between $15-25 each. You also get into most national monuments free, too.
I was also using a site called duffel up to plan this trip. If you're looking for more to do in this area. Arizona is a beautiful state.
