Now tell me.....why did we think for one minute that our plans would run smoothly when we were using public transport to reach our start point. We left mums in Peterborough allowing plenty of time to get to the station and enjoy a nice cuppa without having to rush - only to discover on arrival - train delayed. Now there's a shocker! Finally left Peterborough nearly an hour late which meant we missed our connection from Leeds to Morecambe resulting in two and a half hours to kill in Leeds! Nice! The ticket inspector did brighten our day though. As we pulled into Leeds he gave the usual announcement apologising for the delays - blah blah blah. He then finished it off with saying 'Every cloud has a silver lining. My wife's a terrible cook so as we're delayed tonight she's told me my dinner will be ruined so I'll have to get a take away. Result for me!'
We finally arrived in Morecambe and our first encounter with the local residents consisted of two tattooed girls on the station platform having a punch up, followed by a chap so drunk he was vomiting into his Mottison's carrier bag. And people say Kings Lynn is rough. The seafront, where we posed for the obligatory Way of the Roses start pictures, was pleasant enough.
So now the important part. The cycling. Well we managed a paltry total of 10.10 miles. Have a look at the photo albums for some pics of today.
So the true fun starts tomorrow with around 48 miles of hills, hills and errr....hills. Watch this space.
A Jonny Addendum
I must hijack the blog at this point to redeem my terrible mistake that I made recently. In my overexcitement to tell people how much (or little) we paid for our rail tickets, it pains me to admit I got it wrong. It .. was ... even ... cheaper than I had first realised. Peterborough to Morecambe £10.80 and Bridlington to Peterborough £4.40. Ridiculous! Although judging by the historical (and decrepit) state of Northern Rails rolling stock , perhaps it's a fair deal. Add to that (yes another money fact !) having just eaten in the Wetherspoons in Lancaster , it was cheaper buying a bottle of Hardys Shiraz than 2 glasses of wine. How much ? £5.29 .... Cheap as chips eh.. But why is it £1.50 more down south?? Cheaper up North ? Maybe .. But one thing that is priceless (and rich & warm) are the people ...funny, friendly and fab. Hopefully someone will give us a lift tomorrow up those hills !
Ps. My husband is wearing socks and sandals this evening. The slippery slope!

Rutie Good luck guys, the hills will hurt but the sooner you leave Lancashire and head into Yorkshire, the better! As we won the war of the roses. Take care stay safe
