Hi there.
Well it's our last day in Peru. And we're spending it in Lima.
An update of our trip?
Ah yes Peruvian time....
As we mentioned, we were supposed to leave Yurimaguas at 4. Nope. We ended up waiting on the side of the highway until the road opened at 6:30. Keep in mind, it was 30C and blacktop has a tendency to absorb the heat. So literally waiting on the side of the road makes one VERY hot and drained. It was insane.
But at 6:20 we were moving!
Did we mention our driver, Jorge was insane? He fancied himself the Peruvian Gilles Villeneuve. And the roads are definitely not Indy calibre! These are the same crazy UNPAVED (sand actually) Andes roads, complete with blind corners and two-way traffic on 1-1/2 lanes! The guy was f*n insane!
Somehow we survived. Us and four others in this standard Peruvian s***box of a taxi.
Jorge unceremoniously dumped us off in Tarapoto, where we just missed the last bus to Chiclayo! We ended up in a S /18 (approx $6US) hotel! Very swanky!!!
EARLY the next morning we walked over to the bus station and booked our bus. Thankfully we only had to sit around the terminal for 3 hours before the bus took off. The ride was great and comfortable - our first camas. We were able to sleep and considering we arrived at 3:30 am, that was a good thing.
Unfortunately nothing in town opened until 6am, so once again we waited.
We stayed at a great hostel and saw many ruins etc,
After our visit to Sican, etc. we went to the witches' market. Very cool - voodoo dolls, potions, herbal remedies, and oh yes let's not forget the hoodlums!
At one point J noticed these two guys tailing us. we tried to lose them, but they were too fast. They yanked J's camera, and before F even realized what happened, J was in high-speed pursuit!!! It was like a cop show where everyone sort of opens up for us to chase the bad guys. At the end of what seemed like hours, J had a badly twisted ankle, a police escort and remarkably, his camera.
Back at the hostel we caught our breath and realized just how scary it was! Ah but everything was good. All things considered!
We stayed in Chiclayo a couple more days, because despite that incident, it's a really nice city. But we decided for the last few days of our trip no more tours or ruins, just relaxation. So we headed to the beach!!!
Huanchaco to be exact. One of the coolest surfing locales along the north-west coast. It was beautiful! And our hostel was amazing, right on the water, and because it is winter here and off-season, we practically had it to ourselves.
We unwound, collected rocks and coral and other weird marine life and now we're in the big city.
Lima is, for all it's dirt and decay, a beautiful city. We arrived early this morning on yet another over-night bus, and fly out tonight just before midnight. Before we know it we'll be back home and Peru will be but a glorious memory.
So this might be it, or depending on what we do with the rest of our day there may be one more installment of our
Groovin' Peruvian Adventure!
