Ended up spending longer in Byron Bay than I thought. Mu bus was over an hour late and when it finally arrived we made slow progress down the freeway. We eventually reached Coffs Harbour over two hours late meaning by the time I got to my hostel the vast majority of he day was gone.Coffs Harbour itself seems like a nice place but didn't really get to see much of it.
I booked myself on to a white water rafting trip for the next day. It's something that I'll hopefully be doing in New Zealand but that's about three months away so I figured it wouldn't hurt to do it twice.
The day rafting started with a 7 am pick up the next morning. It was a pretty miserable day weather wise but we were going to spend the vast majority of the day soaked anyway so a little rain didn't hurt. We travelled for about an hour and a half to the Nymbodia River. Once there the group of 19 split into three teams, each team taking a boat.
Over all we tackled about 30 rapids, some more challenging than others. For some we simply floated over but others involved drops, huge rocks, fast water and a rough ride for everyone. We also had three "walk arounds" where we had to get out of the boats and scramble over the banks of the river around rapids that were just too dangerous to run. Our final walk around ended with us jumping back into the water from the rocks at the edge, a height of about 8 feet. All adding to the experience of the whole day.
Even the ride home was an experience. Because the roads from the bottom of the rapids were basically clay and mud it had become very slippy as a result of all the rain. This meant that we all had to get out and push a few times until we were able to find someone with a 4x4 to tow us up the hill. It all made the day very memorable and I can't wait to do it all again in New Zealand.
