Greetings from the high altitude town of Cusco in Peru!
We successfully managed to move on from Brazil, despite our desire to stay, and we heard something about a pig-type flu that was going around?! haha.
We are now in Cusco and about to embark on the famous Inca Trail. Scary times. We arrived here this morning (Saturday 9 May) after a flight from Lima, where we were for a few days.
We stayed in the district of Miraflores in Lima, a more developed area of the city. There were plenty of McDonald's and KFCs to choose from, however we resisted. But we did become quite partial to a Starbucks overlooking Kennedy Park (think it is their version of Central Park) and the Mochachino's went down very nicely indeed.
The weather was again great - we are pretty sure our luck will run out soon - and our hostel had plenty to do, including some free table tennis! (I won, since you ask. Score? 6-4 I believe.)
But now we have spent the day acclimatising in Cusco - you definitely need at least a day - and are all set for the beginning of our Inca Trail. You can certainly feel the altitude up here. We are on the fourth floor of our hotel and just walking up the steps to our room you get a mild headache. We have been walking around Cusco very slowly and drinking Coca Tea, which is supposed to help. Probably just a South American con! Haha.
We are yet to try the delights of guinea pig, but have seen many pictures of their charred faces staring at you before you indulge. Lovely. We can't wait to get stuck into one on the Inca Trail!
We are all set after our new purchases. Mike has invested in a Clint Eastwood style Peruvian looking fleece and I have bought a stupid looking hat with Cusco written on. But it looks like it will be very warm. Temperatures at night on the Inca Trail will be around 0, so it aint going to be the warmest.
We both hope you are all well and having fun without us (not too much obviously) and we will be blogging it up again after our trek! (I am quite regretting all the fast food I have consumed over the last 22 years of my life!)
Take care, ciao for now.
James (and Clint)
