Fish heads that still breathe
On my second day in Macao I had by chance discovered the fish market and had always wanted to go back to get some fresh fish. Now it's been one and a half month in the new apartment (i. e. a nice and clean kitchen) and we still hadn't made use of that.... So we decided to finally go to the fish market. After uni we went together with Nena. Unfortunately it seemed to be not exactly the right timing as hardly any fish and hardly any sellers were there (compared to when I went there). Almost the only thing being sold where still breathing fish heads... the sellers cut of the heads, the fish were still alive and their gills were flapping and still taking in air... the ultimate sign of freshness for the chinese customer? at another stand we saw a woman selling turtles (not 100% sure whether they were turtles as we were recently told that there is some kind of fish that looks like a turtle and that is a local speciality... but I am not so sure...). Poor creatures!!
We were rather shocked by this scene and left quickly, not buying anything but some flowers from outside the building...
Fish we wanted still though and so we bought marinated fish at the supermarket. Unfortunately it turned out tasting very slimy and chinese in a way that I could not eat it. James did eat it but did not exactly love it either. So now we are back to square one and thinking about another attempt at the fish market with some advice from locals...
