Following Ellie's advice and wanting to make use of our rail pass we took the Shinkansen to the town of Nara where Japan's biggest Buddha statue is located.
Nara is a sleepy town and the temple is situated in a park with tame deer that haunt you for food. Buddha was impressive, as always and I lit a candle in the temple for Sam and Grandy. We did a bit of an 'Uncle Chum' in Nara as we were starting to freeze!
Next stop was Fushimi Inari Taisha-lots of orange gates! It is amazing how something so simple can be so impressive. We had been told that there are a lot of gates but we never expected to see thousands upon thousands all creeping up and around a hill-it was amazing. James partook in some up-skirting* during the visit, so made his trip even more amazing!
For dinner we went to the station and had ramen noodles but with a new method of heating and cooking the noodles. The result was delicious and we hope this new method spreads globally.
*We had seen a warning sign for up-skirting in the metro (the only thing that was also written in English). A lot of Japanese women wear very short skirts, so going up stairs or escalators it can be tempting to take a peek! Ellie explained that it has become such a problem that Apple have installed a loud noise whenever you take a photo, even if your phone is on silent!
