Day 6 - it's been awhile since my last post so I have a ton to catch you all up on!
Okay, let's go all the way back to Colorado. Leaving Denver and driving through the Rockies was a real treat, after we got out of the traffic. Turns out loads of people were headed to the ski slopes for some 4th of July skiing! You heard me right, skiing...it's only the 2nd time in history there's been enough snow! Chicago friends, does it make you feel better to know we weren't alone? Anywho, the Rockies are so pretty and with the Colorado River at an all time high we were love struck. Vail for lunch sealed the deal...we will be back!
When we hit Utah we were in shock how quickly the terrain could change...flat, dry nothing. Luckily Arches and Moab stepped in to wow us! There aren't words to explain how gorgeous it is (see blog or Facebook pix...they are worth at least a thousand words). We were definitely feeling hot, hot, hot there, and the mosquitos OMG (you were right Ali). Luckily I got that little air conditioned cabin approved through the adventure committee (Kavi). The pool helped keep us cool, and as a bonus we met some nice new friends in there who are on a multi-generational road trip from Ohio...you all know how chatty I get! There is something special about the pool on a road trip that brings people together and creates lasting memories (pool freaks in Nebraska excluded). Moab is a quaint little town with lots of charm. We highly recommend this stop! After an evening water fight (ice chest water) and tons of laughs, we packed up for an early morning departure.
We headed off to Four Corners Monument where Utah, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico meet. We met my long lost roomate from So. Cal. Circa 1992, DeLea and her family there for lunch. They traveled 1 1/2 hours from Farmington, NM to join us...and we were so glad they did! Our boys had a great time playing with their boys (great kids!), we enjoyed getting to know Jeff and of course, it was sooo nice to catch up with my sweet friend! I've missed you girl! After the obligatory 4 Corners photos and some souvenirs, we were back on the road.
The Grand Canyon sunset was waiting for us. It was a classic Chevy Chase Vacation moment...oohs and ahhs, photos...then off to find our campsite before it got too dark. We decided to attend a 1 hour ranger fireside talk. This ranger was living his dream. He was very passionate and entertaining! He talked a lot about the importance of squirrel poop in the eco system which thrilled the boys! We skipped the 4th of July sing-along so we could get to sleep earlier...one needs to be rested for Vegas after all. In fact, we decided we probably shouldn't even set up the tent...it would just waste too much time in the morning! That right, we slept in the car! Come you've all done it! I barely had my eyes open when Gaurav said "let's go"! With the boys still asleep we snuck out of the park at 5am. We made it to McDonald's for coffee, when Kavi woke up and started crying because he didn't get to see the sunrise. Sooo, we acted like we were just getting coffee to drink while we watched to sunrise over the Grand Canyon, and headed back in the park for the additional photos. Now we are on our way to Vegas...and we are feeling lucky!
