Today our group of international friends went out to check out a famous elevator (this one did go straight up and down) which lent more gorgeous views of the city. Our group began with 9 people, wandering down the hill from our hostel to where we could hop on a trolley to take us the 10-12 blocks north. We were in a busy square and were trying to ask for directions when the correct trolley pulled up and we ran over and hopped on quickly. After about 10 minutes on the trolley, one of us looks around and says, "guys, where is Jonathan?" Uuuuhhh ooohhhh... He must have not seen us jump on! So, we waited for a bit at the stop where we got off for the elevator, and waited some more at the bottom and top of the elevator, but he never found us. Turns of he realized what happened so just went off and did some errands he had been needing to attend to. So it worked out alright, but we all felt really bad for accidentally leaving him. The views at the top of the elevator were pretty beautiful. Looking down across the city it is amazing to see all the beautifully colored buildings, each one built and decorated differently.
On our walk back down from the elevator we happened to see 3 graffiti artists painting huge projects on scaffolding! It was cool to see some artists at work in such a cool city. We later walked through a food market which turned into a street market with people selling everything from clothes, to costumes, to socks, to sunglasses -- like a giant flee market. We were all starving at this point so we went to try to find some food. Being in such a large group is difficult sometimes because no one really wants to make a decision. But, we finally stopped at a little place and had some traditional Chilean food which consisted of French fries topped with fried egg, chunks of meat, onions and cheese. A Heart attack waiting to happen ;-) it was good, but very heavy, and we all ended up passing out in a beautiful park for a while afterward. I did a little sketching while we were there also.
Heading back towards the hostel we stopped to get more food to cook dinner together and then went back to rest and get ready for Halloween. On the bus ride back a guy got on dressed as a clown and was entertaining people for tips. Reminded me of my circus friends :-)
This was everyones, besides me, first Halloween celebration and I think everyone had a great time. I dressed up as a gypsy with a mix of my own clothes and cool makeup. The French girls were a mix of vampire and crazy hair, and the French guys were a mix of battle scar ridden devils. We had bought blinking devil horns at a store which turned out to be a great idea when we were trying to find each other in the club. We had a great dinner and then met up at the top of the hill with some of our other hostel guests (a Dutch girl, a girl from Europe, a guy from London) and went out to the Oasis Club.
It was crazy fun, full of dancing (a good mix of 'American' and salsa), and at one point a guy came out dressed as Michael Jackson and performed Thriller (he did a great job!). There was a costume contest also.
Leaving the club we met back up with everyone at the hostel and realized one of our group wasn't there (how does this keep happening to us!?! Lol), so small group of us went out, allll the way back to the club, to see if we could find them. It turned out they were back at the hostel though, just in a different room! It was good to know they were safe though. Afterwards, we sat at the top of the hill for a bit and watched the sunrise over the city... Such a great Halloween!
