Today was our third day of placement. We were assigned to Dr. Sam however that didnt work out too well. We saw so many crazy things. Jenny was with us today.
The first thing we saw was Dr. Sam perform a carpal tunnel surgery. All he had to do was cut into the wrist to relieve the pressure. It only took like 4 minutes!
After that we went across the hall to see a doctor clean an infection out of a guys knee. The patient was a 19 year old male who had a massive tumor on his knee cap. After his removal surgery, he got an infection which led to sepsis. The doctor sliced open the knee and took out the cement. It looked like he just pulled out his bone. It was crazy!! All of our jaws dropped. We saw the infection he had to clean up. After scraping what he could out, the doctor dumped in a couple rounds of hydrogen peroxide which made the tissue in the knee bubble and overflow into a bowl under the patient's knee. It was the most awesome thing I have ever seen!!
We then went back across the hall to Dr. Sam's next surgery. He was reparing the humerus of a 16 year old boy who had a fracture near the head of the humerus that looked like a triangle. The doctors had to insert a plate and screw it in. However, they had a hard time straightening out the bone on the plate so they had to use a bunch of screws. We had to wear those heavy apron type things cause of the xray radiation.
After coming back from lunch, we came back to find Dr. Sam in the middle of an intense surgery. He was cutting into a guy's neck. Since he wasn't working on bones and all we saw was muscle, we assumed it was a trauma case. Dr. Sam didnt get to explain to us what was happening and he was super focused so we wandered around to the other ORs.
The OBGYN doctor saw us and pulled us in to watch a C section. It was so crazy! The doctor sliced open the skin, fat, and uterus them proceeded to rip apart the hole in the abdomen and pull the baby out by its head with a tongs type thing. It was so rough! He had the baby out in 5 minutes. The baby started crying right away which was good. The doctor put in 4 sets of stiches, closing up all the layers of the mother's abdomen. He is very experienced and had the whole procedure done in 15 minutes!
After that, we wandered around looking into other ORs. We saw an eye surgery. We watched the surgery on the screen and saw the doctor puncture the eye and allow fluid to run out. I guessed she was relieving the pressure from glaucoma? I have no idea though.
Then we got to see a resident screw a patient's jaw together. The patient had broken his mandible and needed for his jaw to be wired together in order for it to heal.
The same resident also removed a cyst from under an elderly man's eye. He even let us cut it open!
When we got back to the house, we had another global health session. All we learned about is non communicable diseases, which was a review for me.
It poured all day today! We were going to go to the national park but decided not to. Hopefully we can tomorrow!
