Day 5 Clun to Warrington
It was a shame to say goodbye to our hostel and the friends we had made, however serious mileage was needed if we were to make it to our destination of Warrington.
My grandfather had arranged for us to stay with an old school friend who he had not seen in over 50 years and had only briefly stayed in contact with over friends reunited.
The appeal of a home cooked meal and a room to ourselves was a great incentive and we made lightning fast time reaching shrewsbury in just a few hours. We then pushed on through Witchurch where we found the drivers to be particularly bad, having a few polite words with a few that cut us up!
Unfortunately however, to reach Warrington from Witchurch we would first have to go on the A49 which was a very busy lorry route. As we began to approach the junction it was eerily quiet with not a car insight for about a mile. Once we reached the junction we realised that this was because the whole A49 was closed for resurfacing and we would have to make a huge detour around it on even busier roads.
Fortunately for us, as we were about to leave we saw 3 cyclists approaching us who said that the security guards had not challenged them and we should go straight across. So for 3 miles we enjoyed an empty road and were able to reach high speeds without fear of coming across any traffic.
Unfortunately the final leg into Warrington did require us to go on busy roads and it was fairly unpleasant.
Upon arrival we were greeted by David, our host, who we had to follow through the town at quite a considerable speed which didn't do wonders for my legs.
However upon arrival we treated as though we were royalty being waited upon hand and foot with tea, beer, wine home baked cakes, the works. I don't think I've ever met two nicer people who made me feel more welcome.
It was great to learn about my grand dads younger days and David said my likeness to him at the 17 was uncanny.
Today has shown me how kind strangers can be and I am very thankful to both David and Anne for that.
Tomorrow we are going to try and reach kendall which shouldn't be too far for my already sore legs!
