'twas Christmas Day and a long drive took us from the battlefields of Natal to the Mozambique border and Safari!!! The majesty of Kruger Park has left us lost for words. (Nathaniel was thankful for the 10 mins of silence) Seriously though, nothing could have prepared us for the experience of viewing African animals in their natural habitat. We saw 9 lions, around 50 elephants (no joke), and countless buffalo, hippo, rhino, wildebeest, impala, giraffe, crocodiles... All except the elusive cheetah and leopard. In the back of a custom made Toyota Hilux, spotting animals was like a game of Where's Wally, except Wally in this case is a two and a half ton black rhino just waiting for the opportunity to end you. Andrea was a natural and was spotting animals just like Nathaniel's faults (it has been a long trip!). The safari experience was over all too quickly and sadly, time is always against us on this trip. We made it back to Jo'burg and said goodbye to the van which was our home for the last 8 days. We also made a quick visit to the Apartheid Museum and it was difficult to imagine such a policy could exist after the 19th century, let alone continue until 1993. We both received a ticket for separate entrances, Nathaniel for the whites only entrance and Andrea for the non-whites entrance, which was an eye-opening demonstration. The museum is a very sombre place, but a necessary reminder to ensure that nothing like this could happen again. We are now waiting for our next flight in a hostel that is actually a converted family home but it is a little bit creepy. We are the only people staying here and the owner resembles Norman Bates dressed as his own mother - cue the music from the shower scene in Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho". Goodbye Africa, cradle of civilisation you. We continue on our quest around the world to our final continent, Asia. Nathaniel has not cut his hair or shaved for the entire trip and is aiming to resemble a half-Asian Jesus in the hope of convincing the people of Asia that the messiah has returned! If we pull it off, we expect them to shower us with playstations, cameras, cheap labour and Malaysian Steel, otherwise known as plastic.
