So after Hue we arrived in Hoi An. We checked into the first guesthouse we arrived at which had an indoor swimming pool (this time not green), and free bicycle rental. Our first day, and we are ready to go on our bikes (not the best it must be said). We headed into town and after some breaky we hit the many tailors shops that litter the town, Hoi An being one of the best places to get clothes made at a very cheap price. One after the other we searched for the perfect colour and material for our suits. Eventually we found what we were looking for and were messaured up. Work done we made for one of the beaches, a fair distance to go by bike we arrived with tired legs. We spent a couple of hours on the beach, dodging the jellyfish under clear blue skies. We made it back to the guesthouse just as it started to tip down with rain, lucky or what. Of a night, and with our water-proof ponchos on, we went out for dinner by the river. Stocking up on some alcohol we finished of the night with one of our now custom poker nights with Nicki and Joe. Following morning we had a re-fitting at the tailors before deciding to give our legs a rest and head to the nearest beach. Later that evening we picked up our new suits, trying them on in the shop we felt important wearing a tailor-made suit, safe to say we looked good.
NHA TRANG
Looking out of our 5th storey room window we had a great view of the beach. The sleeper bus down from Hoi An was uncomfortable; as they always are, so we got some shut eye before checking out our new beach destination. The beaches themselves were nice and clean however the sea was dirty, as bits of fruit and other garbage would continuesly float past. Our first few days were spent much the same lying on the beach topping up the tan. The town itself has many nice restaurants but with the drinks fairly expensive we decided on one with free draught beer of vodka/whiskey between 6 till 9 o' clock, Nice huh. At night we tried our luck at the Sailors club which was full of travellers drinking the same cheap bucket of something. What?? it had alcohol in it and it was cheap. All night we kept bumping into people we had met in Laos. At 2 in the morning we couldnt get back into our hostel, we had to bang on the gates before we got let in by the sleepy receptionist.
After a failed atempt at the harhour to catch a boat we went to the nearby waterpark. On first inspection it seemed like we had made a mistake as the only three rides there looked less than exilerating and the wave pool with no waves didnt look any more tempting. Surrounded by kids we must have been the oldest there but we had the best time. With our rubber rings we made a five man train down the tube slide, over and over again we kept going back to the top. It did start to rain whilst we were on the pirate ship in the kiddies pool so after a while we left. Our last day and because our bus wasnt until the evening we went out on a snorkeling trip. Me, Rob and Ed would be leaving for Ho Chi Minh city whilst Nicki and Joe would be staying longer. The trip included a stop at the Aquarium on one of the islands, then we made our first stop for snorkelling were we couldnt see a thing underwater. The next stop was much more entertaining. We had some lunch on the boat, which was really nice, and then they whipped out their instruments for some Karaoke. The mike would be past around the boats passengers, so we got to listen to some chinese songs and vietnemese songs until the boat was eventually treated to our version of "Let It Be" by The Beatles. Lets just say they didnt want an Encore. Time for some more snorkeling, which was much better as the water was clear and we could actually see coral. Whilst swimming around we were treated to some free "f**ing bullsh** wine!" which was being shouted by the old vietnemes guide with his floating bar. His floating bar was a big piece of polystyrene with bottles of sh** red wine.
Waiting to catch our bus we said our goodbyes to Nicki and Joe who have become good friends during our stay in Vietnam. We will miss them and our poker nights. On to Ho CHi Minh...
