Poring is a small village surrounded by rainforest and famous for its hot springs. After checking in to a guesthouse just opposite the park we sit down for a tapas of Malaysian dishes.
The next morning charlie and I wake up early to walk the canopy that is set amidst the trees. Before that opens we decide to take a stroll in our birks to Langanan waterfall. That 'stroll' turns in to a 4 hour trek. The morning dew drips from the plants that pass through, We get caught on the vines, fall off rocks and leeches drain blood from our perspiring bodies. We rehydrate at the stream, an earthy tasting water. Then we hear the sweet harmonious sound of cascading water. We come out into a clearing and we are greeted with one of the most amazing waterfalls we have ever seen. We sit and enjoy the beauty, take a last sip of fresh mineral water and hike back through the forest.
The canopy walk then turned out to be a futile exercise after the waterfall experience. We hitched a ride in a fishy smelling jeep to Ranau and got the minibus back to Kota Kinabalu.
Plans to head straight to one of the Islands were abolished as we missed the last boat. We did however manage to book for the next day. As there is no accommodation on Sapi island we decide to take a tent and camp on the beach, which gave us one last night in KK. Charlie and I headed to the fish market to feast on fresh lobster and calamari (mum doesn't eat fish so she passed). We rendezvous in a coffee shop later that night and decide our next move, both in travel and Jenga. We concur that after Sapi we would travel west to Pangkor Island.
An early rise and a breakfast that consisted of delicious pork porridge and baked peanut and coconut buns, we were ready for the boat to the island. We approach the crystal clear waters of Sapi and marvel at our home for the night. The day is spent swimming, sunbathing, exploring and parasailing until 4 o'clock when the island empties of its daily tourist and we are left alone, apart from a few wart-hogs and monitor lizards that are patrolling the beach. We watch the sunset from the other-side of the island before setting up our tents and spend the night under the stars.
The rising sun wakes us. After a dip in cool azure waters we catch the boat back to KK. From here we catch our flight back to KL and straight onto Pangkor island.
