Today would likely be our last in Chiang Mai for the time being, as we would likely head up north to Pai tomorrow. We decided to go ahead with our plan to use the next door hotel pool for sunbathing and a dip. Luckily it was very cheap at 100 baht and so we wasted no time in snagging two of the loungers surrounding the pool. The hotel offered a buffet breakfast which on inspection, looked pretty dire and overpriced. I headed to one of the cheap restaurants for a bite to eat and brought Laura some fruit juice back with me. Laura was already basking and we sporadically used the pool. It was very clean and not overly dosed in chlorine. The deep end was over six foot in depth which meant some people were doing basically professional dives into it, however I'm never that graceful. We chilled out in the sun but had to take a dip to cool off in the ever increasing heat. We took a break to grab some lunch from a local restaurant before heading back pool side.
On our return to the sun loungers I noticed a local Thai man in a white shirt sitting on a chair next to the pool. I did not take much notice of him as I assumed he was a member of staff, such as a pool attendant. He walked over to our direction and stood behind the brick water feature of the pool which creates a constant jet stream into the water. I kept looking up at him because he had a strange looking face, like he had make up on or a black eye. I kept on reading my book and after getting to the bottom of the page I looked up and saw something which would scar me mentally for a long time. This chap had his 'you know what' out and found it acceptable to play with himself thinking no one was watching. Now it is hard to know what to do in these situations and all I could think of was to tell Laura not to look at him, which she obviously did. All the while this man had no idea we were looking at him both horrified and astounded! Laura marched off to reception and struggled to get her point across to the staff even with rather undignified hand Gestures. Eventually this western chap came storming over with a bowl of cereal in hand and kicked the man out, demanding him to do his zipper up! I was just flabbergasted and felt bad not knowing how to react to this bizarre situation. The sight will haunt me for a long time! After this little episode we enjoyed the pool but by now there was grey cloud cover and the temperature had turned chilly. We headed back to the hostel for a freshen up and a change of clothes whilst trying to recover from our ordeal.
We went out in search for food and decided to try somewhere new, this was a open air Thai restaurant who specialised in curries nearby so off we went. We had looked at a couple of Mexican places on route but they were very expensive and most Mexican food is very ordinary from most Asian countries. We headed to the thai and enjoyed noodle curry (strange I know), spring rolls, rice, peanut curry and Laura's favourite.. Papaya salad . By this point we were tired and headed home still thinking back to today's events which we both would not forget in a hurry.
