Packing. Possibly the worst part of travel prep, except for the mind numbing, wallet crunching hunt for travel insurance and the nail biting few weeks before your visa is accepted. Having sorted only my visa so far and putting off finding travel insurance for as long as possible I have now decided to start packing my backpack!
This may come as a surprise to those that know me well as anyone will tell you that my packing is usually left until about 3 hours before my flight and involves frantically throwing anything and everything into my bag and finding upon arrival that I've forgotten most of the things I need. Possibly the most notable occasion being forgetting to buy a backpack until the night before my 7am flight and purchasing one from argos 3 minutes before the shop closed. And being from argos the bag fell apart within the first 2 weeks anyway...
So, lesson learnt.
Thankfully this time my backpack is already half packed as I returned from South Africa only 5 months ago. Who has time to unpack these days?!
Sadly the 'take half as much as you think you need and twice as much money' packing guide has always been something I've struggled with. Many times I've stuffed my bag so full I've spent a small fortune on thread to sew up the seams and a slightly larger fortune on replacing my backpack every couple of months - I'm not one of those travellers that can leave my straightners and heels at home. In fact I spent agonizing hours when packing trying to decide whether I need my leopard print heels AS WELL as my standard black ones, because what if I fancy a change? And don't even get me started on the wedges vs heels debate! The saddest moment of my trip to India may have been when I abandoned my wedges in a guest house in Goa having not worn them in 5 months. Of course I needed them exactly one week later when I was invited to a VIP nightclub in Dehli but then thats life for you! Luckily shoes in India cost about the equivalent of £2. And last alot longer than Primark! Seeing as Australia is definately a first world location I think I can get away with one pair of heels, one pair of trainers and a pair of flip flops.
So two hours later and my shoes are sorted. I think I'll leave it there for now. Clothes will take me a week at this rate! How I used to get away with a 20 minute panic packing session is beyond me! Oh wait, I didn't...
