To continue from the last blog, I was writing about my time on Fraser Island. I don't think many of us slept that well on the first night because we were all uncomfortable sleeping on the ground in our tents. You would think sand would be quite comfortable to sleep on, but no! It is hard and lumpy, even with mattresses to lie on. We all woke up at about 6.30am, but no-one was in a hurry to leave, although we should have left camp at that time to drive along the beach before the tide came in, but we just took our time. We packed everything up and left at about 7.30, I decided to drive and some of the boys joked that there would be a crash sooon because "Jenny was driving". Cheeky boys, my driving was fine, apart from driving through lots of freshwater and splashing the whole car, but I was driving when the tide was coming in, which wasn't that easy! Driving along the beach was cool though, now I can tell everyone I've driven on sand, I hadn't actually driven for about 5 months either, so my driving might have been a bit rusty. We drove past a shipwrick, that was really cool but I didn't have much space on my memory card in my camera, so I just left other people to take photographs of it. I then continued driving to our next stop, which was Indian Head. There we climbed up a hill, but then the four of us, Phil, Luke, Nick and myself, gave up walking, because we didn't know where we were going, and came back down, but apparently if we had conitnued up the hill, we could of seen sharks, turtles and other creatures in the sea, or something like that.
We stayed at Indian Head for a while, then Phil drove from there to the Champagne Pools. It was here that we met up with the other 2 4x4s that were part of our group and we all had lunch together and played frisbee. We went into the Champagne Pools which is just a rocky area, where you can go in the water and the waves crashing on the rocks, create lots of bubbles, looking like champagne bubbles, hence the name. I cut my toe a few times on the rocks because the waves pushed you over and you couldn't see what you were standing on either. The 3 4x4s left together to make for camp and we set up our tents with ease. There was less wind that night and we didn't use our canopies, but used them as mates for everyone to sit on and play drinking games on.
I went to bed quite early, about 10pm because I wasn't in the mood for a late night, but some other people went down the beach a bit to where there was a "disco". Some old men had come down to us all earlier in the night to tell us about this "disco" where there was music and a television. When the other people went there, they were a bit disgusted as the old men also had a shower, we thought it was there so the old men could perve on young girls. Some of the guys from my tour, then changed the words on the sign from "Disco" to "Dico" and pissed themselves laughing whilst running away.
The next day I woke up really early, because I was desperate for the toilet, ie in the bushes, and I happened to be up to watch the sunrise. It was so lovely, I got to see the sun come out of the sea and feel the warmth. After we'd packed everything away, we made our way to Eli creek, where some people went for a swim and the water is fresh water, so you can drink it. I forgot to put on my bikini though, so couldn't go in, but I went in the water at Lake Mackenzie. It got really hot there and you had to go in the water to cool down as there wasn't much shade.
We left Fraser Island, I fell asleep in the car before we got to the ferry, I don't know how though because the path was so bumpy from previous tire tracks, apparently my hand came up at one point and I pointed, this was whilst I was asleep. When we got off the ferry I drove the car when we were back on the main land. We ate pizza that night, $10 all you could eat, bring on the veggie pizzas! We had a few drinks with others, but since I'd been up since 5am, I was pretty tired and went to sleep early.
The next day we just had a lazy day, slept in until late, wrote some postcards and drank with a few people in our kitchenette. The next day we woke up really early, expecting to leave at 7am, got to reception and they told us that our bus had broken down and we wouldn't be leaving until 11am so should just go back to bed, because that was where our driver was. The 3 boys and I thought they were joking as we did not want to wake up that morning. We ended up just playing card games and I rang home.
We left at 11am, on a much smaller bus, but met up with a girl who we had been on our bus earlier and made our way to Kroombit Cattle Station. As we weren't going to get lunch at Kroombit, we didn't need to rush and we went go-karting in Bundaberg (where they make a famous rum). That was good fun, the boys went first and Phil, being the Grandpa of he group anyway, made his way slowly around the track, letting everyone overtake him. It was a good job no-one was being timed, otherwise I think Phil would have felt quite embarrassed.
We arrived in Krumbit about 6pm and got to do clay pigeon shooting in the dar. The people in charge shone a big light at where we were to shoot and we just had to aim. We had 5 bullets, I hit one pigeon, some people got none and Phil got an amazing 3 or 4! Phil found something he was good at!
