As planned we've pushed the spearhead forward into Italy, conquering San
Remo, Genova and Brescia on the way........... sorry, wrong article.
Bonjourno!
Today we packed up early and left the site in Cagnes sur Mer and travelled
from Nice, through Monaco (on the motorway this time) and followed the A8
into Italy. It's an unbelievable road and takes a LOT of concentration to
drive it because the lanes are narrow and the drivers are, well, Italian....
not as bad as Spanish but certainly getting there. If you have ESP to know
what they are going to do next then it certainly helps :-)
The coastal region is amazing for a number of reasons, first of all as you
climb out of the Bay of Nice and hit the hills it gets very, very steep - the
coast road is a crinkly one. They've overcome this on the motorway by
building bridges between the hills then digging tunnels through the hills,
the result is peculiar to say the least because as well as the light/dark of
bridge and tunnel the road climbs and falls at the same time as winding it's
way between the hills (on the aforementioned bridges) and through the tunnels
- and all told it lasts for about 70 or 80 miles......... it is fun but there
is not much time to look around and enjoy the scenery as I normally do. Oh
yes, and everyone is more or less flat out...... well doing 130kph (80mph
ish) anyway. The speed limit is marked as changing between 80kph and 130kph
but no one seems to care or pay any attention to that..... there are no speed
cameras on that bit either and we didn't see any local fuzz until we go to
our desitnation. It's bizarre but every tunnel and bridge have names and the
names are proudly displayed at the begining of each section!
The other thing that spiced up the journey is we were both itchy. :-( about
half way through the journey it seemed to be getting worse. Then I killed an
ant, then Claire killed and ant, then I killed another......... I think we
killed about 6 on the journey but when we reached Lake Garda and started to
pitch out tent we discovered that we had a small army of ants with us! They
seem to be in most things that don't have good seals and tomorrow we have to
figure out how to fumigate our stuff and the car :-) Claire says that means
we have ants in our pants :-( I'll not go into the fumigation details of
those........
The campsite is quite big but we have managed to find a good pitch away from
the main part of the site, we are on the side of an Olive grove in a group of
5 pitches, we have a bank of mature oaks on the terrace in front of us which
drops down to the lake - it is beautiful - and they have cool block freezer
facilities for FREE! Now thats how it should be.
Right, we've got to catch some Zeds now so that we're fit for the morning!
Ciao
Ian and Claire
