Another all action day.......
After yesterdays afternoon maliaze we decided that it would be a smart thing
to do to go canoeing in the heat of the day today, at least we'd be in on the
water and keeping that little bit cooler....... maybe.
Anyway, morning first, after breakfast I went for a little ride on my bike,
you've probably guessed already but it was up the nearest hill :-) So I rode
up to the top of the cliffs above us where most of the Paragliders set off
from, it's a 6 mile climb and took me just a smidgen under an hour and I
bearly saw any other traffic on the road - fantastic! Anyway, got to the top,
rode a little way on the undulating plateau in a sort of North Easterly
direction until I judged that I had just enough time to get back in time for
the daily routine of shopping for fresh food and eating lunch before we could
get onto the canoeing. The downhill was terrific, 38mph max and a real twisty
turny section, loads of fun but obviously all over far too quickly. It looks
like there is some impressive MTBing tracks here as well it's a pity we won't
be here long enough to try them out :-(
We launched the canoe at about 1430 and man was it hot! The company just down
the road from the campsite had taken us 13kms up stream taken the boat off
the rack and said, "right, it's that way, off you go....." :-) We had to drag
the boat down a rocky slope first to get it into the water but it wasn't that
hard really. The canoe was a tough plastic affair which you sat on top off
rather than in - it turned out that there was a good reason for the boats
being tough - the river was shallow in parts and had some big rocks in others
(which were hard to see until moments before you hit them!). This river was
far more fun than the Loire which was wide and very calm, this had sections
of rapids :-) lots of rocks and then either shallow fast flowing bits or deep
slow bits..... very good fun though. After a few miles and a few issues with
some of the rapids (getting wet going through them) we decided to pull in, go
for a swim in the current and take some photos - you can see them on the web
site :-) then suitably cooled off it was back in the canoe and tootle back
down stream past the camp site and lots of impressive scenery and back to the
boat yard to change our soaking clothes and pick up the car........ great way
to spend an afternoon!
Tired now, time to hit the airbed :-)
