Travelling day...... it was a bit sad to leave Garda, given that the site was
good, we had a good pitch (if not a bit busy with ants :-) they seem to be
everywhere we go - I think maybe they've built a nest under the car and we
are just transporting them around with us!)
We decided to head into the Alps :-) and so we set our sights on a nice
sounding site near Interlarken about 277 miles away and off we went. First of
all we got to the Autostrada an it was shut :-( and it proclaimed to be busy
with roadworks around Brescia (the closest city) and Milano....... TomTom
sorted out an alternate route and we were soon on our way, the roadworks
didn't hold us up much and we seemed to whizz through to the boarder quite
quickly. I was keeping a check on the milage and the fuel level and we had
just passed the last services in Italy when the fuel light came on. I'd only
been thinking this morning how far I could get with the light on and thought
I might try it when I got home....... well, as it turned out the answer was
1km less than the next services! :-( We had just passed the 1km to go sign
when the engine light came on so kicked it out of gear flicked the hazzard
warning lights on and cruised down the hard shoulder (at least this bit of
motorway had one - phew). The road ran slightly uphill so we didn't cruise as
far as I'd hoped and when we came to rest we were still a fair way out,
anyway I managed to start the car again and tickle it to jus tunder the 500m
to go sign.......... but no further :-( So out we got, walked to the
services, bought a can....... you can figure the rest out :-) suffice to say
all was well and no emergency call out was neccessary - at least now we have
a reserve :-)
There were a few notable things on route, we went through a 13km tunnel which
was quite a bizzare experience (to go through a tunnel for that long), we saw
a church covered in red cloth (totally - check out the photo!), we went over
a beautiful mountain pass with fresh snow on it (2240m and me in shorts and a
tee shirt :-) ) and we arrived at teh camp site after reception had shut
fortunately the woman saw us arrive and came down to greet us. It was
noticably colder than Garda but then we were 720m up - it never said that in
the guide book! The scenery was stunning and the sky was crystal clear which
turned out to be bad news as that meant we spent a very, very cold night
freezing our b***s off! Morning came too slowly and we were both irritable
and cold..... it took us ages to warm up and even the sandblasting from the 4
minute showers didn't help. The showers were on a meter, paid for with tokens
and giving a grand total of 4 minutes of water - it was luke warm (well, mine
was, Claires was tepid, apparently) but the water came out with such force
you didn't need soap to wash - I think it must have been designed by those
people who make jetwashes for the cars.....
We decided to move on and after hearing a British guy talking to a German
this morning (6th) we heard that the temperature was warmer near Annecy - so
off to France we went.
More later
