I read somewhere that if you have to chose one national park in Australia, it should be the Blue Mountains outside of Sydney, so we made this our last stop in the camper. It was quite a dramatic change in climate. All of a sudden we found ourselves in the middle of beautiful fall colours and much cooler temperatures. We arrived just around dusk to a temperature of 10 degrees which was quite a change from the constant temperature of 20+ we have been getting used to in the past few months, and we actually had to undust our pants and sweaters.
Luckily the sun was out the next morning to heat the day, and we headed for Scenic World, a whole network of cable cars, skyways and railways to explore the beautiful mountains. The most thrilling of the rides was a train that went down a 50 degree incline through the rock to the sound of tbe Indiana Jones theme song, which actually was quite appropriate as we felt quite adventurous. The adventurous feeling was soon replaced by claustrophobia as the daytime tourist crowds came in from Sydney (they must have read the same thing as me about the Blue Mountains). We escaped to more secluded viewpoints and back to Blackheath where we happened to run into a local street fair with wine tastings and juggling training for all ages - to the amusement of us all.
On our way into Sydney the next morning, we found the serenity of the mountains in the remote Mt Wilson: no other tourists, red fall leaves, a bright blue morning sky and a last camper made breakfast in open air.
