Hola mi Amigos
Simon and I have had an eventful last few days. Since last time we travelled from Santa Elena to La Fortuna, to see Arenal Volcano. We stayed in a hotel with a nice view to the Volcano, which supposedly spews lava regularly, therefore we were hoping to witness an eruption. We met a very funny French guy called Frank, who we ended up having a few drinks with in the evening, however there was no eruption which was disappointing.
The following day we boarded a bus to Jaco, which took most of the day to get there. Arriving in Jaco, which seemed nice on outlook, but was more of a place for seedy tourists, we only stayed the next day so that Si could try his hand at surfing. Our hostel had a ping pong table which we played on a fair amount, and which caused a fair bit of competition and a lot of sweat!!
Anyways the following day we jumped on a bus heading for Quepos, from where we planned to visit Manuel Antonio National Park. The bus journey was only an hour and a half so relaitively painless, and upon arrival we checked our bags into the Wide Mouth Tree Frog Hostel, which was run by a very amiable British man from Christchurch. We chucked our stuff into the hostel and jumped on yet another bus headed for Manuel Antonio, and the National Park. Reaching the Park we paid the $10 entrance fee, and being cheap we decided not to get a guide, which this time worked very much in our favour. There were so many tourists there (most of whom had guides), therefore whilst walking down the trails we would spot a group (with a guide ahead) and see what they were looking at before shooting off to the next set to see what they were having a gander at!! Was awesome, we saw many a sloth, which move very slowly. We also managed to see the sloths doing their fortnightly exercise of coming down the tree to defacate at the base before heading back up to sleep!! After sneaking a peak at many a sloth, we shot down to the beach which was part of the national park. The beach was awesome, with blue water, soft sand and completely shrouded in jungle!! Amazing. Whilst relaxing on the beach we heard a commotion behind us and turned round to see a troop of white faced capuchin monkeys jumping through the trees. We later found out that they had come down to the beach to steal stuff out of tourists bags (which we witnessed). From the beach we proceeded down a few more of the trails (and saw some racoons) before shooting back to the hostel after a good day of wildlife viewing!!
The next day we stayed in in the morning to watch the England game, however it was not being broadcast on Costa Rican TV, therefore we had to put up with watching the America vs Algeria game, before rushing out to catch a bus to attempt to reach Panama. We spent the rest of that day on buses however only made it to Cuidad Neily, on the Costa Rican side of the border, where we ended up having to stay a night in the grottiest hostel we have stayed in so far!! Anyways Panama tomorrow.
Adios
Howard and Simon
