Buenos Diaz Todo
Since I last wrote we have been rather busy what with hangovers, boat trips and border crossings. The night of the 28th we decided to go to a small place called Vino de Baco, a small tapas restaurant on one of the main streets through San Cristobal. The place was amazing, they gave you free food with every drink, so that night we decided not to eat, but nibble whilst we were drinking. The night wore on and the thought of tequilla came into mind, so we ordered a few and knocked them back. The barman had taken a liking to Fran and therefore kept her shot glass topped up with a spirit called Batsi Pox or Posh for short. Us 3 guys couldnt be seen to be out drunk by a lady so we also ordered Posh whenever Fran was presented with one. Posh tastes like a mixture of paint stripper and tequilla so not a pleasant combination. All four of us were pounding back these shots and by the end of the night we were pretty gazeeboed, so stumbling back to our rooms we got into bed. Waking up early however for our speedboat ride down Canyon Somierdo, was not pleasant, and the thought of the speedboat made us even les excited. All of us were extremely hungover, (the posh obviously worked) and Simon seemed almost dead. He was curled up in the foetal position in bed and could do nothing but giggle, his limbs seemed not to work. Coaxing Simon out of bed we stumbled back down the road to catch the bus to the Canyon. The bus ride was incredibly unpleasant, however on leaving the bus and getting going in the speedboat the splashing water seemed to invigorate us!! Simon was incredibly invigorated seeing as he was getting soaked at the back of the boat. On the canyon trip we saw some amazing gorges and a few crocodiles ranging in size from utterly pathetic to pretty dangerous!!
That evening was a quiet one and we slept like kings ready for the morning crossing into Guatemala.
The next morning Joel left us which was a sad occasion as we were so close to making him stay for a while longer. After saying our goodbyes we headed to the bus terminal to say goodbye to Mexico, and a big Hola to Guatemala. The bus to the crossing took around 3-4 hours. The crossing went smoothly and we were confronted with an incredibly brash, in your face, slightly dodgey first town in Guatemala called La Mesilla. After yet another sweaty walk up a hill to the bus station (sweaty seems to be the norm for us in these countries) we caught our first "Chicken Bus" to Huehuetenango. We soon found out why it was called a chicken bus. They rammed 3-4 people on every seat (which would have seated 2) plus people sitting on laps, standing up. There must have been double the amount of people than there were seats, absolutely crazy, but rather exciting and rather sore on the old buttocks after a while of not being able to move.
On leaving the bus, we found that we had got off a stop too early and were still quite a way from the city, so flagging down a taxi and using a bit of spanglish and the universal language of pointing and grunting we managed to hop in and get a ride to Hotel Central, our next stop. The city seemed alot dirtier and noisier than the other cities we had been to and having had a long day we decided to get some serious food and head to bed early (which didnt seem likely as the mexicans blast their music out late, and are a huge fan of their car horns).
