Day Twenty Five
Up at 7am to be ready for the bus pick-up at 8am. It was a cold and rainy Vancouver morning: apparently there a lot of them. Glad we packed the wet weather gear and gloves.
After being greeted by our cheery driver, Lisa, we jumped aboard the bus and headed to Whistler (115 km from Vancouver) with a couple of stops on the way. The scenery is magnificent with towering mountains covered with huge trees hugging the roadside. First stop: Porteau Cove, a coastal bay that looks out onto a number of islands. Although not very big it's a popular place for skindivers all year (even winter). Stopped for 10 minutes (still cold and rainy) and then back on the bus to our second stop, Shannon Falls. The falls are the 3rd highest in British Columbia and an easy walk from the carpark. They're huge. A pretty amazing sight. Back on the bus and onto Whistler.
The 2010 Winter Olympics were held in Whistler, and a lot of money was spent. The government spent almost $2.5 billion on transport and road upgrades, which included a new highway from Vancouver to Whistler. The place is geared for tourism (although it's pretty quiet this time of year).
We had 4 hours to look around and it rained non-stop. We did see some snow but it was only on the high peaks. The highlight was the Aboriginal Interpretive Centre: Whistler which is owned by 2 native tribes and they jointly operate the centre. It was really interesting and the admission was included in the tour ticket price. The guide showed us how to make rope from tree bark (which we could keep). We both did pretty well: it actually looks like string.
Back to Vancouver for a drink and something to eat.
Another early start tomorrow for a long day when we visit Vancouver Island and the Butchart Gardens.
