Day Twenty Four
Today was fine but chilly. Vancouver seems to be like any other capital city full of people and cars. Unfortunately, we've noticed a lot of homeless people of all ages and sexes.
We walked down to Canada Place, a short walk to the wharf area, to catch a shuttle to the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park which is located only 15 minutes from the CBD. The bridge is about 140 metres long and sits 70 metres above the Capilano River. It was built by a Scotsman in 1888 who bought 6,000 acres of forest either side of the river as a retreat. After he died it was passed through the family and eventually they left it to the government to be used as park. The original bridge has survived and been upgraded over the years. It's one of the most popular tourist attractions in Vancouver.
The area is densely covered with forest of redwood, cedar and douglas fir trees. It's hard to remember that you're only 15 minutes from the CBD. There are a number of raised boardwalks and lookouts that can be easily accessed. We had a close encounter with the Douglas Fir squirrels which are a lot faster and more agile than their New York and Boston cousins. They're not afraid of people and will come right up to you. I was taking a photo from one of the lookouts and sensed something at my elbow. This little squirrel wanted a look.
Headed back to the hotel and found the nearby St Regis Bar & Grill for dinner. It's a typical sports bar with good food at a reasonable price: a lot cheaper that Quebec.
An early 8am start tomorrow. We're being picked up for our day trip to Whistler.
PS I was reading my earlier blogs and found some of the entries had errors. I've now corrected them. See what retirement does to you!
