Bridie is due to arrive this evening!!
I had to change hotels as we booked a different one for while she was here (can afford more when there are two plus the first place I stayed was just for a single and had no doubles available at this time). My first hotel was Hotel Bed in Roma. It has a fantastic location-about 200m from roma termini (once you find it that is, I went a very roundabout way the first time). Its on the fourth floor of a quintessentially italian building-big doors at street level, marble foyer and stairs, high ceilings and dodgy steel cage elevator barely big enough for you AND your suitcase.
If you need a place for a couple of nights, its a great little place with heaps of character and perfect after a long day. The proprieter, Paolo, speaks perfect english, is a fountain of knowledge on the area and sights and will help out anyway possible. When I asked if there were any good places to get food, he mentioned a couple, showed where they were on a map. Fantastic! As some Italians are very unhelpful it is useful to have this help.
This morning I decided on a two hour jaunt around the city until I had to check out at 11am. I love how you can just go for a walk here and there are little surprises on every corner. I explored the area north of the forum (around via del quirinale, largo chingi via del tritone and via del corso). Saw the piazza della republica, santa maria delgi angeli, san carlo quattro fontane (i think that would translate to 'four fountains something...' as this place is at an intersetion which consists of four fountains, one on each corner), scalinata trinits dei monti) aka spanish steps), palazza chigi, piazza del popolo (who stole the egyptian stele and brought it to rome huh?) and fontana di trevi (trevi fountain). The trevi fountain was my favourite, it was early morning and not too many people about.
Had to do the ipso chango switcharoo with hotels. Got lost again. Must stop following google maps, it marked the hotel much further down the street so I walked around in circles for about 10 mins lugging a suitcase in blazing 36 degree heat in the midday sun. Then because I was early I had to leave my baggage behind and check in later (kindof expected that to happen). No hardship, it was time for lunch-margherita pizza with salami, peroni beer and a capaccino. They seriously do the best coffee here, its freaking good.
Now to kill some time until I try to find Bridie at Roma Termini.
