Cumulative miles driven: 5,200
Driving into San Luis Obispo was, too be honest, a little disappointing but not for where we were but for what we had likely missed. We had left Bakersfield after a coffee stop with the sun setting and heading for US-58, a fairly plain and straightish road according to the road atlas, which actually ended up as one of the most curvaceous and steep drives I have done recently. It was like driving the UK's Hardknott and Wrynose Pass but on steroids (and in the pitch black of an unpopulated California night) as the road climbed to over 4,000 feet and dropped down back to almost sea level. It would probably have been nice to actually see more than just the headlight glare during this last two hours of a 480 mile driving day as the views must have been stunning.
San Luis Obispo was a nice place to spend a day without the car actually turning a wheel. Our motel was easy walking distance to the downtown area which was filled with 'proper' shops, bars, coffee shops, restaurants and a couple of breweries too. Something for everyone. It was also a city where people did walk and also one with reasonable looking housing within walking distance of the vibrant central area. Little wonder this has been called the 'Happiest City in America' so use the link below for a video about San Luis Obispo and see what you think. It is a fairly European outlook for city living and maybe that is why we have put it on our 'return to' list.

SLO (as the locals abbreviate it) was also just ten miles short of us reaching the Pacific Ocean something we had set out to see four weeks previous when we left Atlantic Beach near Jacksonville, Florida. If we had driven in a fairly straight line to Avila Beach, without stops, then we could have done the journey in a little over 39 hours and only 2,600 miles of driving. We took just a little longer than that and doubled the driving distance. It is such a good job the petrol is so cheap in the USA!
So we have achieved what we set out to do, but we still have a few days left before catching our flight back to the UK from Los Angeles. Maybe we should actually just travel back overland as flying really will be cheating a little?

Sweeney Todd. Everywhere looks nice and clean. I'm sure that looks like the Pier and Beach at Weston S Mare.
Andy Holt America wins hands down (generally) on cleanliness, good public toilets (even in the middle of nowhere) and it is so easy to get around. I think WSM may have to work a little harder!
