tuesday 7th october - day 46
jaipur
Yas is feeling better so I show her nibs - obviously we have the waffles. Gopal picks us up from there and takes us to the post office helping us post ours and sydneys parcels. We are there ages as they dont do envelopes or boxes.- everything is packaged in hand sewn white fabric and then sealed with hot wax.
Medieval or!?
We go straight to eleday. An elephant experience place where gopal has managed to bargin us some cheap tickets with the owner. We chat and have chai with the owner - pushpinder - before feading the elephant. We paint the elephant with water colours - which is not easy with hard wooden brushes and a trunk that constantly moves! Two of the elephants are being painted properly by the guys for a wedding this evening. We manage to get up onto the elephant the traditional way - which involes holding onto the elephants ears, and pulling yourself up via the trunk. The elephant helps by lifting his trunk up, but both of us end up flat on the elephants head having to be shoved and pulled up. Once both of us are up, we walk about the nearby village for 30 mins or so - nothing to see here but the ride is nice enough. Back at the sanctuary, some more feeding and then we help wash the elephants. Before the governemnt banned it, you used to be able to take the elephants down to the lake and wash and bathe with them there. Eleday has a pool so we are able to wash the elephant from there. The pool only has about a foot of water but we end up drenched from the elephant soaking us with water from her trunk. Once weve brushed and cleaned all the paint off, the 2 elephants leave for the wedding and we sit with push whilst he trys some henna on us. We only learn after we are covered in crap henna that thats the.first time hes done henna. We will have to tell people a kid did it. We end up skipping dinner and having beers with push and gopal until quite late - drunk after 5 beers gopal drops us off home before we end up english drunk which wouldn't go down well in india!
