Sunday 5th october - day 44
jaipur
Ok so the most important thing today is not exploring jaipur, but securing a glastonbury ticket. Sydney and erin head off out and we set up the 2 mobiles, yas's tablet and even use the hostel computer! 26 mins later, we didn't get past the holding page but a mate from home has sorted them for us thank god.
After all that stress, we head out to badi chaupar for shoping and to see the hawa mahal.
Jaipur, known as the pink city due to its pink/orange washed buildings, is a labyrinth of bazaars, palaces, and historical sights. Locals favour brightly coloured clothes and turbans and camels and elephants are a frequent forms of transport here. The bazaars in badi chaupar are an array of vibrant markets which specalise in jewellery, handicrafts, saree shops, fashion puppets and so on.
After abit of shopping and being harrased quite abit we end up at the hawa mahal.
Also known as the palace of winds, it was built in 1799 with pink and red sandstone
and is believed to have been constructed in the form of the crown of Krishna, the Hindu god. The palace has 5 storeys and
its 953 windows or 'Jharokhas' are decorated with couloured glass and intricate designs. The main intention behind the construction of the Mahal was to facilitate the royal women and provide them a view of everyday life through the windows, as they never appeared in public.
Unfortunately we cant find sydney and erin as we had planned but we do manage to get up onto the roof of one of the shops for a great view of the city at sunset. After food we take a rik back to the hostel.
