Arrived in shanghai around 9.30pm after a 90 min flight delay. metro was shut so we took a bus that took us to the city centre (Line 2). Most buses and metro stop running from the airport around 9pm. Biggest thing that hit us, was not the Chinese pushing you out the way or rolling suitcases over your feet for the bus, but the smell. It's like rotten food, sewers and piss all mixed in.
Anyway, the bus cost 22rmb and after some granny shoving and a team effort we secured a seat. 10 minuets into the journey and the bus breaks down. Another one arrives Within about 20 mins and it's another free for all, getting off and getting onto the next bus. I witnesses a few people jumping barriers... roads, oncoming traffic or common courtesy ques are not a concern.
Arrive in the city centre and flag a taxi. Driver gets quite irate with an English written address, so we note for future to have a copy in Chinese too. Taxi was 6rmb.
Check into City Central hostel (100rmb per night) around 11pm and it's still busy with people up using the wifi in the reception/common area. The hostel is clean, and decorated nice, comfy seats, computer area, lots of books, photographs etc. there's a bathroom/shower on each floor which is handy. We are obviously on the 5th floor, but there's a lift thank god. Our dorms are 4 beds but no one else is in, so we of course, take the two bottom bunks and get straight of to sleep with the help of the aircon.
